A big part of our work is raising awareness of the issues and spreading the word about the campaign. We do this by running our public opinion survey, which is informative as well as seeking an opinion. Our volunteers go out in their local areas to talk to the public, asking what they think about front page samlples being found in view of children, and also how they feel about adult advertising being available in publications that are not age-rated. Survey participants have the opportunity to join the free supporter's register at the end.
According to our survey, 97% of the British public find it unacceptable that sexually explicit front covers are found in view of children in some shops (samples used include The Daily Sport, Loaded and Gay Times). They also believe that pubilcations containing adult advertising should be rated 18+.
We lobby politicians, presenting information and evidence. For example, we have been involved in giving evidence to the Scottish Public Petitions Committee in relation to petition PE1169.
We aim to make it easier for concerned individuals to take action and make their voices heard.
We seek publicity through the media for the campaign where possible, to raise awareness.
We network with individuals and groups who share our concerns, whilst remaining an independent organisation in our own right.
We measure our work on 5 basic steps of success:
1 – publications with sexually graphic covers to be moved up high
2 – publications with sexually graphic covers to be covered or bagged
3 – publications with sexually graphic content to be age-rated
4 – industry to self-regulate if they can do so responsibly
5 – failing successful self-regulation, legislation
