Front Page Campaign Slams Daily Sport

On Saturday 26th June 2010, the Saturday Sport printed a picture of a woman bent over and apparently showing her labia from behind on its front page.  This so-called newspaper is on display every day in tens of thousands of newsagents across the UK, and because of its status as a newspaper is generally within easy sight and reach of children and young people where it is stocked.  No age-restrictions apply for purchase of this newspaper.

 
Early Day Motion 263

Early Day Motions (EDMs) exist to allow Members of Parliament to put on record their opinion on a subject and canvass support for it from fellow members.  Our EDM No. 412 closed at the end of the last parliamentary session with 156 signatures, showing strong cross-party support for the issue.

EDM No. 263 was updated and re-tabled on 16th June 2010 by Lindsay Roy, MP for Glenrothes and Central Fife.  It was co-sponsored by Nadine Dorries, MP for Mid-Bedfordshire, and Sir Menzies Campbell, MP for North East Fife, giving strong support from all three main parties.

 
First Porn Display Conviction in 10 Years

A Fife shopkeeper received a fine of £53 for displaying hard-core pornography in a family store right down to floor level.  Saeed Ahmed, 57, who runs Newsworld on St Clair Street, Kirkcaldy, failed to turn up at court three times.  On the fourth time he finally pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent display.  The conviction, which took around 9 months, was the first under The Indecent Displays (Control) Act Scotland 1981 in at least a decade.

 
Hamdy Shahein - Porn Free Newsagent

Amy and Sylvia were able to meet with "porn-free newsagent" Hamdy Shahein during their recent trip to London.  Hamdy is well known for being involved in a long-running battle against W.H. Smith who repeatedly sent him pornography that he did not want to sell.

 
Family Values Conference

Amy and Sylvia attended the Family Values Conference in London on 2nd and 3rd June.  There was a wide variety of speakers from different organisations and backgrounds, all interested in, or working in an area relevant to family values. 

 
Parent Exposes Child Sexualisation by Publisher

A supporter came across a very interesting article posted by a dad about gaming magazines that contained porn ads at the back.  These were not age-rated, and his 8 year-old daughter had no problem buying them from large family stores. 

 
Stop Sexualising Young People, Says Home Office

Recommendations made by the Home Office in relation to the sale and display so-called "lad's mags" do not go far enough.  The Sexualisation of Young People Review recommends that the existing voluntary guidelines be replaced by a mandatory code, which would place regulations on the display of such magazines and restrict their sale to persons aged 15 and over.

 

 
Public Opinion Survey

To date we have conducted our brief survey with 732 shoppers in 6 different High Street locations and at 1 other public gathering place where people of mixed ages, genders and interests were present.

The survey is of great value to raise public awareness, identify supporters, and to demonstrate the strength of public opinion.
